Brand History 
Sustainability 5.11 started in California as a clothing line created by American rock climbing pioneer, Royal Robbins. Robbins identified the need for clothing that was more durable with better functionality. Royal Robbins LLC began manufacturing specialty pants by the name of “5.11” in 1968, which had a trademarked strap-and-slash pocket design.The name “5.11” comes from the highest rock climbing difficulty level that was listed in the Yosemite Decimal System, which was developed by Robbins in the 1950s.
5.11’s roots are in Yosemite National Park, where Royal and Liz Robbins began designing purpose-built apparel for the climbing community scaling iconic landmarks like El Capitan and Half Dome. They also had a deep respect for our environment as advocates of climbing techniques that left little or no damage to the rocks they climbed. Today at 5.11, they do their best to carry on their vision through their product designs, manufacturing processes, quality control, and environmental mindfulness.
